2021.09.20 03:11 WestworldIsLife How to ask this question politely?
One of my good friends will commit to something then as it gets closer and I confirm he will say we will see not sure yet. I want to ask politely why do you say yes to stuff then when it comes time suddenly say maybe not? Yet when his cousin asks to do stuff he’s always there in a heartbeat. I don’t want to sound like a dick just genuinely curious.

2021.09.20 03:11 brooklynbodycount Just an opinion.
Hello, folks, Harley riders. I have been riding for 30 years, starting Soviet JAVA 350 in 1986. Then there was a line of all sort of bikes. Japs and Germans. Friday I got my first ever Harley - Sport Glide 2021. During the weekend I made one thousand miles and I am ready for my first service next week. Somehow, being 51, I now understand tattoos "Born To Ride". is it normal? It is like my 51 yo wifey accidently left me and 26 yo Thai girl fall in love. Dudes, I am joined like fkng terminator

2021.09.20 03:11 BuddhismCopyPasta On killing insects
This is a really hard question and one that doesn't have a ready made answer. In fact this is a question that helps one to understand the difference between Prakritika Dharma(law of nature) and Dharma(Teaching of Buddha).
According to Buddhist history/legend, similar question helped the great Indian sage Asanga (Half-Brother of Vasubandhu who wrote the famous Yoga-Chara-Bhumi, the founding text of Yogachara school or Consciousness only school) in his quest for enlightenment.
According to legend/history, when Asanga comes out of a long solitary meditation retreat, he encounters a dog infested by a spider who begs for help so that it can live and take care of its puppies. When Asanga proceeds to remove the spider, the spider questions the wisdom of Asanga on denying it its prey and thus putting its life at risk. The spider also gives lecture to Asanga on the law of nature, law of balances and law of Karma (i.e. how violence/killing maintains order in the nature, how the dog's previous Karma led to its present position). But due to his compassion for dog, Asanga couldn't see its suffering and instead offers himself for the spider as prey. Due to Asanga's selfless compassion, Bodhisattva Maitreya appears and takes them to Tusita heaven and clarifies all the doubts of Asanga leading to his awakening/enlightenment.
Also this is one of points of contention between Buddhism and Jainism (While Buddhism allows killing of animals in some cases where as Jainism doesn't allow it any case).
Coming to precepts, according to me, they are not something that one can master the moment he decides to follow Buddhism. They ought to be perfected with correct intention and practice. Sometimes, if conditions demand, precepts can be violated but violation shouldn't go against Dharma. Ultimately one's wisdom helps in deciding what is right according to Dharma in a given situation. For example, where I live, we have problem of mosquitoes and I use mosquito repellent to kill them so that me and my parents are not harmed.
If you sincerely follow Buddhism, compassion for other animals and trees and even insects and plants will increase. With increased compassion and wisdom, you'll find solutions that minimizes harm to all beings involved. For example, one can notice that unclean environment around house leads to growth of insects/pests and thus one should keep his house tidy to reduce infestation of insects and thus need for killing them.
Ultimately Buddhism is about minimizing and ultimately ending suffering of all beings involved and this is what one should always keep in mind. So, sincerely take all steps possible to solve the problem and use violence only when any other solution is not possible.

2021.09.20 03:11 SS_DD123 Setting longer parts center on lathe.
So I’ve been in the shop about two years (previously tool and die for two years) and I’m curious how y’all set your parts center on the lathe with a steady rest? We only have a few spiders, so we can’t use those all the time. And the other way we do it is using clay on the end of the part, and using the live center to mark on the clay until the marking becomes center on the part. I’m curious how everyone else finds center on longer pieces they’re turning.
